Wastewater recycling to be promoted

Staff Reporter

It can be adopted in schools, colleges, hospitals, hotels and apartment complexes

CHENNAI: The Rotary Club has installed a simple system to recycle wastewater on the Asan Memorial School campus off Greams Road.

The pilot project for recycling grey water from the school's canteen will be formally inaugurated on April 16. The system has been working well in the last two weeks. The process will be explained at a workshop to be conducted on the school premises on the same day. R. Shyamsundar, Rotary District 3230 Governor, said the project would serve as a basic model for people to understand the principle of grey water recycling. The concept could be adopted in schools, colleges, hospitals, hotels, apartment complexes and independent houses.

Grey water is wastewater from showers, baths, washbasins, kitchen sinks and washing clothes. It does not include water from toilets.

V.N. Krishnan, chairman, Rotary Water Management Committee, said that 60-70 per cent of grey water could be recovered for reuse. "The system is also very cost effective. For example, a recycling system in a complex of 12 apartments will cost about Rs. 12,000." The recycled water can either be used for gardening or put into a sump for future use. In Asan school, the recycled water is used to water plants.

Rotary's workshop seeks to promote awareness on rainwater harvesting and water recycling among students, non-governmental organisations and resident welfare associations, said water management committee associate chairman K.S. Jayaraman.

Water management resource persons at the seminar will include M. Sampath Kumar, Sekar Raghavan, Indukanth Ragade, Govind Ranjan and Sultan Ismail.
