Leaders convey New Year greetings

Let there be peace, says Governor

CHENNAI: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and leaders of political parties have greeted the people on the occasion of Tamil New Year, `Vishu' and `Baisakhi.'

In his message, Mr. Barnala said: "Let the dawn of Tamil New Year, `Viya', usher in peace, prosperity and all-round development in the State and contribute to the growth of the nation."

He also extended his greetings to the Malayalees on the occasion of `Vishu.'

Mr. Barnala greeted the people, more particularly Sikhs in India and abroad, on the occasion of `Baisakhi', which "is one of the popular festivals enriching the varied culture of India.

It is an important festival for the Sikhs and is a formal celebration of the Sikh community for the birth of the Khalsa on this day in 1699 AD."

Ms. Jayalalithaa said: "Let happiness flourish in every household of the Tamils. Let Spring blossom anew in their life, bringing joy throughout the year."

Extending `Vishu' greetings, she said the Malayalees always preserved their culture irrespective of the area where they lived.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi said: "I extend my greetings to the people as I am confident that the New Year will provide a new direction and fresh light, leading the State to prosperity."

Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary N.Varadarajan appealed to the people to rededicate themselves to the cause of developing Tamil as administrative language and medium of instruction.

Union Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation G.K. Vasan, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president M. Krishnasswamy, Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko, Communist Party of India State unit secretary D. Pandian, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam founder Vijayakanth and Jananayaga Munnetra Kazhagam founder S. Jagathratchagan also extended Tamil New Year greetings.
