Manmohan concerned over violence in Sri Lanka

Diplomatic Correspondent

Speaks to President Mahinda Rajapakse

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed concern at the escalating violence in Sri Lanka during a telephone conversation with President Mahinda Rajapakse on Wednesday.

South Block sources told this correspondent that the discussion took place at the request of the Sri Lankan side. The request for the conversation came three days ago. The sources would not confirm news reports that Dr. Singh specifically referred to violent incidents in Trincomalee.

The violence comes as the LTTE sought a postponement in peace talks with the Sri Lankan Government, scheduled to take place next week in Switzerland.
