MUMBAI: The Maharashtra Government will consider moving the Supreme Court against Wednesday's Bombay High Court order lifting the ban on dance bars in the State. "We will seek legal advice for further action on the question of filing of appeal in the Supreme Court," Deputy Chief Minister R.R. Patil said in the Legislative Council.
"Licences have expired"
Mr. Patil, who also holds the Home portfolio, said licences of all dance bars had expired now and they would not be able to open immediately. Besides, the High Court had given the State Government eight weeks time to implement its order. He said it would not be proper to comment on the 257-page verdict before studying its content. But he maintained that the State Government had full authority to make such a law (banning the dance bars), it did not violate Article 15 of the Constitution or undermined any rights. Mr. Patil said the ban was struck down on the basis of classification of hotels and an argument that if women could wait at the tables, why they could not dance.
