Publishers urged to file annual statements

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Registrar of Newspapers for India (RNI) has urged publishers of all newspapers and periodicals to file their annual statements regularly to help the Government make a correct assessment of the growth of the press in India.

For this year, the last date for filing the statement is May 31, 2006.

Though the Press and Registration of Books Act, 1867, makes it mandatory for publishers to file their annual statements, not more than 10 per cent do so regularly.

As per last count, 70,000 titles are registered with RNI. Of these, only 700 publishers file annual statements regularly.
