BELLARY: B. Sriramulu, Minister for Tourism and Textile, while expressing concern over the prevalence of poverty and untouchability in the country wanted officials to implement the various welfare schemes announced by the Government to eradicate them. Speaking after inaugurating the birth anniversary celebrations of Ambedkar and Jagajivan Ram at the Municipal School Ground here on Friday, Mr. Sriramulu wanted officials to plug all loopholes to ensure that all welfare schemes were implemented to serve the purpose for which they had been announced. Stating that the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes were like the two sides of a coin, he called upon the communities to live in harmony. G. Karunakar Reddy, MP, who was the chief guest, recalled the contribution of Ambedkar and Jagjivan Ram for the uplift of the Dalits. He also said people from all sections of society should participate in the birth anniversary celebrations of these leaders. Arvind Srivastav, Deputy Commissioner, said "jana spandana" programme had been launched to create awareness about the various schemes for the welfare of the poor and also to redress the grievances of the people. He said Mr. Sriramulu was also keen on participating in such programmes and instructed the officials to take steps to redress the grievances of the people. Mayor G. Somashekar Reddy, who presided, said 90 sewing machines would be distributed to Dalit women through the Bellary City Municipal Corporation besides taking up development of 21 slums for which the Government had released Rs. 4.5 crore. D. Yerriswamy, editor of Ashakirana weekly, and Srinivasmurthy, lecturer, and Mundargi Nagaraj spoke. M.S. Somalingappa, Sirguppa MLA, Durgamma, president of Bellary Zilla Panchayat, K.A. Ramalingappa, zilla panchayat vice-president, Mallikarjun Reddy, president of the taluk panchayat, and Dalit leaders participated. Earlier, portraits of the two leaders were taken out in a procession.
