A mass leader dedicated to service: Shekhawat

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairperson K. Rahman Khan on Friday condoled the death of A.B.A. Ghani Khan Choudhary, MP from Malda in West Bengal.

Mr. Shekhawat described him as a mass leader dedicated to the service of the people. Throughout his life, Mr. Choudhary worked for the welfare of the poor and the downtrodden, he said.

Mr. Chatterjee said he had been Mr. Choudhary's colleague since he was first elected to the seventh Lok Sabha. The service rendered by Mr. Choudhary as Minister, both at the Centre and in the State, as MP and as member of parliamentary committees would be remembered for long.

The Congress lost one of its "pillars of strength," said party president Sonia Gandhi, who described Mr. Choudhary as a dedicated politician and administrator and a committed Congressman.

Mr. Rahman Khan said Mr. Choudhary spent his life promoting universal moral values and bettering the lives of the underprivileged. Nationalist Congress Party general secretary Tariq Anwar said Mr. Choudhary, as Railway Minister, started a number of prestigious projects not just for West Bengal but also for Bihar.
