DEHRA DUN: The Hardwar police have arrested two men and allegedly recovered two leopard skins from them. Their ringleader, Ranjit Bangali of Saharanpur, however managed to escape with two more skins. According to the police, the accused, Sompal and Omi, have admitted to killing four leopards in the Dhaulkhand area of the Rajaji National Park over the past few days. They used to trap the cats and kill them with lathis, said Deputy Inspector-General of Police Ram Singh Meena. This puts the number of leopards killed in Uttaranchal over the past five years at 126. "There are about 250 leopards in the State and if poaching continues like this, the day is not very far when the cats will become extinct in this region," said a senior forest official.
