JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Government on Thursday appointed a senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, M.D. Korani, as the Chief Information Commissioner after dilly-dallying on the issue for several months. The State is yet to create an infrastructure for providing information to public under the Right to Information Act. The State legislation on the right to information, enacted in 2000, was repealed in the Assembly's Budget session earlier this month with the observation that it had lost its utility after the comprehensive law made by the Parliament. The Opposition Congress had accused the BJP regime of purposely delaying implementation of the Right to Information Act and not creating the infrastructure stipulated under the law even five months after the end of the deadline for establishing necessary mechanism. The orders for the much-awaited appointment were issued by the Raj Bhavan late on Thursday evening. Mr. Korani will hold the office for five years from the date of assuming the charge or till he attains the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier. He is presently the Chairman of the Revenue Board and was due to retire in November this year. Rajasthan is among the pioneering States in the legislation on right to information.
