CHIDAMBARAM: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader M. Karunanidhi wonders how Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, against whom there are many court strictures and one who was embroiled in cases, could make Tamil Nadu the number one State. Addressing a roadside meeting at Chidambaram on Friday, Mr. Karunanidhi said even though there was a specific rule that those in power should not buy government land, Ms. Jayalalithaa had transgressed it by buying the TANSI land. Hence, the Supreme Court directed Ms. Jayalalithaa to act according to her conscience and return the land to the Government. In the Rs. 60-crore wealth case filed against her in Tamil Nadu, doubts were raised over fair trial. Hence, the Supreme Court ordered the transfer of the case to Karnataka. In production of paddy and sugarcane, Tamil Nadu slipped to the fourth place. The farmers were subjected to many hardships under the Jayalalithaa regime, he said. In terms of volume of farm produce, there existed a huge gap between the achievements of the earlier DMK regime and those of the AIADMK regime. He promised to concede all the demands of the farmers.
