HYDERABAD: The Central Water Commission has convened a joint meeting with officials from Andhra Pradesh and Orissa at Delhi on April 18 to resolve the issues relating to Vamsadhara Stage II project. The meeting is being conducted at the instance of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with whom the Orissa Chief Minister, Navin Patnaik, lodged a complaint against Stage II of the project. Mr Patnaik complained that Vamsadhara Stage II, if allowed to be executed in its present form, would submerge a large number of villages in Orissa. He sought a separate tribunal to be constituted for sharing the waters of the Vamsadhara. The Andhra Pradesh Government wants to complete Stage II on the other hand with a view to giving partial irrigation benefit during the forthcoming kharif itself. In fact, Vamsadhara Stage II figures in the list of projects for which an action plan is under implementation for early completion so that all of them will provide irrigation to some 7.5 lakh acres of land during the kharif as committed by Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy.
