Appeal to newspapers
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
The Registrar of Newspapers for India (RNI) has urged the publishers of all newspapers and periodicals to file their annual statements regularly to help the Government make a correct assessment of the growth of the press in India.
For this year, the last date for filing the statement is May 31, 2006. Though the Press and Registration of Books Act, 1867, makes it mandatory for publishers to file their annual statements, not more than 10 per cent do so regularly. As per the last count, 70,000 titles are registered with the RNI. Of these, only 700 publishers file the statements regularly.
