Tributes paid to those who died in action

Bangalore:
A number of senior officers of the police, Fire Services and Home Guards, led by Director-General of Police and Director of Karnataka Fire and Emergency Services R. Srikumar paid their respects on Friday at the Martyr's Column at the Fire and Emergency Services Academy on Bannerghatta Road.
April 14 is observed as Fire Services Day in memory of 66 members of the then Bombay Fire Brigade, who lost their lives while putting out fire that broke out on board an ammunition ship S.S. Fort Stikine at the Victoria Dock. But for their timely action, there would have been a major explosion causing serious damage to the harbour and surrounding parts of the city.
Similarly, six courageous men of the Karnataka Fire and Emergency Services have lost their lives while on duty between 1976 and 2000. Apart from them during the past year, eight officers and Fire Services personnel of Delhi lost their lives.
The commemoration parade held here was to pay homage to all these brave people who sacrificed their lives.
