VALENCIA: Gilles Simon reached the final of the Valencia Open claycourt tournament with a 6-2, 7-6 victory over the seventh-seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco here on Saturday. The Frenchman, who has yet to win an ATP title, will face the another Spaniard, the in-form Nicolas Almagro who disposed off wildcard Marat Safin 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. Earlier in the quarterfinals on Friday, Safin beat second-seeded Argentine Gaston Gaudio 6-4, 6-4 while, Almagro booked his place in the last four with a 6-4, 6-1 win over sixth seed Filippo Volandri. Simon had a tougher time as he edged out Italy's Andreas Seppi 7-6, 7-6. The results (semifinals): Gilles Simon bt Fernando Verdasco 6-2, 7-6 (7/5); Nicolas Almagro bt Marat Safin 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
