41 militants killed in Afghanistan

KABUL: In a fierce clash between the U.S.-backed Afghan troops and suspected Taliban militias in the Taliban's former stronghold Kandahar province on Friday, 41 insurgents were killed and six government troops died, said provincial governor Assadullah Khalid on Saturday.

``Personnel of Afghan law enforcing agencies backed by coalition's air force launched an operation against Taliban militants in an area between Jalai and Panjwai districts Friday morning and so far 41 rebels have been killed,'' he said in Kandahar.

The militants assembled at the area three days ago to conduct subversive activities and the government troops foiled the conspiracy, he said. — Xinhua
