Sringeri Sankaracharya visits Thalapady

He expresses happiness over communal harmony in State

THALAPADY (KASARAGOD): Throngs of devotees, including leaders of political parties, bureaucrats, corporate leaders, women and children, welcomed Jagadguru Sankaracharya Bharathi Tirtha Mahaswamigal at Thalapady bordering the Mangalore-Kasaragod district on Saturday.

The Sringeri Sankaracharya, who is on a four-day visit to the State, was given an official guard of honour at the Viswas Auditorium on his arrival in the evening. He arrived from Udupi via Padubiri in Mangalore.

Cherkalam Abdulla and C.T. Ahmedali, MLAs; BJP former State president C.K. Padmanabhan, District Congress Committee president Gangadharan Nair and Sri Sarada Sankara Seva Samithi general secretary Kannur P.N. Gopalakrishnan and Karad Brahmin Sabha convener Harish Bhatt were among those who accorded reception to the Sankaracharya.

Mr. Abdulla offered a `Swetachatra,' Mr. Ahmedali , `Chamarams' and Congress leader N. Ramakrishnan, `Kanika' to the Sankaracharya. Kalady Sree Krishna Temple managing trustee presented a golden gooseberry.

North Zone Inspector General of Police M.N. Krishnamurthy and Kasaragod District Collector Mins Alam were also present during the reception.

The Sankaracharya's visit will be confined to Kasaragod district in view of the Assembly elections in the State.

He was to visit Kalady, but that would be in July, said Mr. Gopalakrishnan, who is also the organising secretary of the reception committee.

Giving a benedictory address soon after the reception, the Sankaracharya, who spoke in Tamil, expressed happiness over the communal harmony prevailing in the State. Kerala had become famous worldwide because Adi Sankara was born in the State. Keralites showed great sanctity to the Sringeri Saradapeetham. The seriousness adopted by them should be everlasting, he said.

In his five-minute address, the Sankaracharya also thanked the State Government and Chief Minister Oommen Chandy for the reception and wished him well.

Mr. Abdulla said that it was kind of the Sankaracharya to accept the invitation of the Government. Mr. Padmanabhan also spoke.

The Sankaracharya, who left for Malla via Kumble, was given a ceremonial `poornakumba' welcome at Malla Durga Parameswari Temple.

Following a Dhooli Padapuja and Devidarshan and Sri Matha Gurunivasa inauguration, he gave a benedictory address there.

He also performed the Chandramouleeswara Puja that lasted till 10.30 p.m.
