An array of handicraft items on show at Poompuhar

Tamil New Year special sale offers up to 40 per cent discount

CHENNAI: Poompuhar's Tamil New Year special sale has a wide range of handicrafts to suit every art lover's purse.

From exquisite bronze figures that cost several lakhsto woodwork keychains priced at Rs.15, a variety of crafts are on offer at a discount up to 40 per cent.

"This is the first time we are offering such a big discount," said V. Subbaiyan, Manager, Poompuhar. While all items are given a 10 per cent discount, some crafts have been marked 40 per cent off.

A `Kalyanasundarar' set of bronze figurines and a life-size Hoysala style idol of Perumal are available at 40 per cent discount. An intricately carved rosewood swing, priced over Rs. 2 lakh, is on sale at a discount of 25 per cent.

Sandalwood statues, intricate Tanjore paintings, white woodwork, metal craft, enamel work, papier mache idols and silver jewellery are also available.

Handloom skirts, tops, kurtas and children's clothes from Rajasthan have a 20 per cent discount.

Poompuhar sources much of its bronze and wood craft from artisans in Swamimalai near Kumbakonam.

Sandalwood statues are made by the members of the Poompuhar unit at Kallakurichi in Villupuram district.

Crafts from north Indian States are also on display.

Tribal crafts are also on sale, though there is no discount on them. Bookmarks, necklaces, bags and greeting cards are available. The sale at the Poompuhar showroom on Anna Salai will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on all days (including holidays) till April 23. Call 28520624 for details.
