MADURAI: Probably it must have been one of the best performances of the police. It received a complaint, registered a case and arrested the accused, all within 20 minutes, thanks to the toll-free on-phone legal services inaugurated in the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court.

The complaint was lodged with Madras High Court Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah immediately after he inaugurated the service and declared open the `Maha Lok Adalat' here on Saturday.

Even as V. Sikkander (55) of Tiruvadavur was ventilating his grievance, judge P.D. Dinakaran summoned Superintendent of Police Abhay Kumar Singh to the dais and asked him to take action.

The inaugural ceremony proceeded as scheduled until the Superintendent of Police circulated a slip to the judges seated on the dais.

After taking a look at the message, the Chief Justice said the Melur police, on the complaint received over phone, had registered a case under Section 294 of the IPC (causing annoyance to others by uttering obscene words in or near a public place) and arrested the accused.

"I hope the police act equally in other cases too," Mr. Shah said amid a thunderous applause from thousands of people, who had gathered for the `Maha Lok Adalat.'

The people in 14 revenue districts under the jurisdiction of the Madurai Bench could seek legal assistance through the facility (2433040).
