THE RIGHT CHOICE: Humanities and science courses with a futuristic perspective are in demand as they provide greater job chances. Photo: Vino John
IN A bid to make Science and Humanities attractive to Plus-Two students, Bharathidasan University will offer a string of five-year integrated postgraduate programmes, repackaging them with contents relevant to the job market. With effect from 2006-2007, the university will offer integrated programmes in three M.Sc. disciplines; Geosciences, Physics with specialisation in Material Science, and Media and Communication, and an M.A. programme in Economics. More importantly, the university has infused flexibility into the system of curriculum planning in order to ensure that the latest developments in the respective subjects are incorporated into the contents on a yearly basis. Panels of eminent experts evolved these courses with a futuristic perspective, said senior university professors. By way of repackaging the conventional programmes with attractive nomenclature and updated contents, the university is certain about succeeding in projecting these courses as viable alternatives to professional courses, and most of all, attracting `best brains'. The university went about its plan to offer these integrated programmes buoyed by the phenomenal success it met with in offering two five-year M.Sc. integrated courses in Life Sciences and Bio-Medical Sciences through its School of Life Sciences, last year. An examination was conducted on an all-India basis, and students with top scores were chosen for the courses. Apart from the integrated courses, the university will admit students for its new two-year postgraduate programmes in emerging areas. While the School of Marine Sciences will offer M.Sc. Marine Biotechnology and M.Sc. Marine Science, the School of Life Sciences will start M.Sc Microbiology and M.Sc. Plant Biotechnology. Likewise, the School of Physics will offer a two-year M.Sc. course in Medical Physics, and the Department of Biochemistry will start M.Sc. Biochemistry. The School of Environmental Sciences will offer an MBA. programme with specialisation in Environmental Management. Similarly, the Department of Computer Science has lined up two programmes - MBA in E-Business Administration, and M. Tech in Advanced IT. Online postgraduate diploma programmes in Geographical Information System (GIS) and Autocad will be offered by the School of Geosciences, and the Bharathidasan Institute of Technology respectively. The School of Education will offer P.G. Diploma in NGO Management, and Yoga (part-time), and the School of Social Sciences will start M.A. in Human Resource Management.
