THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Prakash Karat has said that an LDF victory in the Assembly elections would signal the people's rejection of the economic policies of the UDF Government and their desire for an alternative path of development. In an interview to The Hindu here on Sunday, Mr. Karat also said that the CPI(M) Polit Bureau had an unfinished agenda in Kerala and that it was confident of resolving all the organisational matters that had been left pending because of the elections. "We have some unfinished agenda that has been set out by the Congress and our State conference. Kerala is the biggest unit of our party. So, naturally, we will pay attention whenever required and we are confident that we will able to resolve all outstanding issues," he said. Asked whether the Polit Bureau viewed the change that had come about in the campaign front as a vindication of its decision on candidate selection, Mr. Karat said that for the Polit Bureau it was "a straightforward thing." The principle of democratic centralism, according to which everybody implemented decisions regardless of their views about it, applied only to the party and not to the people. "We noted that there was a reaction among a section of the people. We took that into account and reconsidered our decision." He felt that the LDF manifesto had taken seriously the question of developing material production in Kerala and catering to the aspirations of the middle class. "There is the desire among the middle class that there must be a better education system and I think the five-year rule of the UDF has also given them the experience that this is not the best way to go about improving the education system. We are trying to strike a balance.," he said.
