Dance bars

The Bombay High Court's verdict quashing the law banning dance bars in Mumbai is in accordance with the values of a civilised society. The ban was violative of the dancers' right to livelihood. As for the degeneration argument, no one has any right to impose his or her skewed thinking on others in the name of morality. No one has the right to deny the bar girls their livelihood in the name of so-called decency. Morality is not about snatching bread away from hungry mouths.

Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy,
Hyderabad

Targeting a category in the name of decency is unjustified. With no alternative sources of livelihood, the dancers' lives were thrown out of gear. The verdict is a godsend for the bar girls.

Yasmin Banu,
Abu Dhabi
