LDF will take proper steps if voted to power: CPI

Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: Communist Party of India (CPI) State secretary Veliyam Bhargavan has said the Left Democratic Front (LDF) will take proper steps if voted to power to ensure that the United Democratic Front (UDF) never returns to power.

At a `meet-the-press' programme here on Sunday, he said in fact, one of the aims of the LDF in this election was to keep the UDF permanently out of power. He said that the State was in the grip of an overwhelming pro-LDF trend. It would ensure the LDF to come to power with a big majority.

Mr. Bhargavan said that he could confidently predict the LDF winning in at least 115 seats.

Rajan case

He said that as Chief Minister during the Emergency, the late C. Achutha Menon had come to know about the custodial death of the engineering student P. Rajan only four months later.

Mr. Bhargavan said that on hearing about Rajan's death, Achutha Menon had wanted to resign immediately.

Achutha Menon had at that time sought the permission of the CPI State secretariat for tendering his resignation. The State secretariat referred the issue to the Central Council of the party and Achutha Menon spoke to the then party general secretary Rajeshwara Rao about it. But the party Central leadership asked Achutha Menon to hold back the resignation and two weeks after that the Emergency was relaxed.

Mr. Bhargavan disclosed this while he was asked for his comments on the reaction of the DIC(K) leader K. Karunakaran on Thursday following the death of T.V. Eachara Warrier, Rajan's father. He said the issue of Rajan's death was taken up by him and the RSP(B) leader Baby John at that time with Mr. Karunakaran.

``If I start mentioning anything about that meeting, it will result in an emotional outburst. Hence I prefer too keep mum on that,'' he said.
