KOLLAM: A pressure pumping system of water supply, launched by the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) in the city a week ago, went awry four days ago. Supply has been affected in the city. Households depending on the authority for water have been getting a paltry supply for less than 20 minutes in the morning for the past three days. The system was launched with an assurance of supplying water from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. KWA authorities said supply through the new system resulted in pipes bursting at a couple of points. This had resulted in taps in the city remaining dry even on Vishu. On Sunday, following strong protests from people in coastal areas, the authority, somehow, managed to supply water in the western parts of the city. But supply in other areas has not been restored. Sources said that in the wake of the pipes bursting, the KWA has considerably reduced the amount of water being drawn from Sathamcotta Lake. The Asramam overhead water tank of the authority is being fed by a borewell which does not function properly. The tank is able to supply water only for a few minutes and soon it goes dry. Consumers have been rushing to this tank complex in the morning in an agitated mood, demanding proper supply. However, the operator there has been expressing his helplessness. It is this tank which supplies water to the eastern areas of the city. The United Democratic Front candidate, Babu Divakaran, and the Left Democratic Front candidate, P.K. Gurudasan, in the Kollam Assembly constituency have called upon the KWA authorities to ensure that supply is resumed on Monday.
