SALEM: The Anna University is expecting to receive around 1.80 lakh applications from the students for the Tamil Nadu Professional Courses Entrance Examinations this year (TNPCEE), its Vice-Chancellor D. Viswanathan has said. Talking to reporters here on Sunday, he said the university had received about 40,000 applications so far. He said the university had chalked out a number of plans to improve the quality of engineering education in the State. The university was keen on improving the skills of the faculty members in the colleges. "There is a shortage of well-qualified teachers for engineering education. Even the developed countries are facing this problem. As the top rankers prefer jobs in the industries, which are offering higher pay packages, the educational institutions are finding it difficult to get qualified teachers." The university was planning to conduct refresher courses and training programmes for faculty members, he added. Mr. Viswanathan said the University would introduce the following new programmes in the coming academic year: B.E. Agricultural and Irrigation Engineering, B.E. Materials Science Engineering, M.E. Manufacturing Systems Management, M.E. Water Resource and Irrigation Management. He said conducting the Common Entrance Test through online was possible by developing appropriate technology and software.
