Shameful turn of events

Sir— , This refers to media reports following the death of Kannada superstar Rajkumar and the shameful events that were unleashed by some people in Bangalore.

Dr. Rajkumar's loss is irreparable. Should Dr. Rajkumar have been alive to witness the turn of events, he would have promptly disassociated himself with such people who stooped so low in those two days of mindless rioting.

The Government should have been prepared to handle the situation.

The Government should take responsibility for the shoddy planning right from announcing the death of the cine actor to the haphazard manner in which he was laid to rest.

Sampath S. Chakravarti,

Black day for news channels

Sir, — The unrest following the death Rajkumar is being unfairly blamed on the city's police force. The live television coverage showed the police demonstrating restraint under provocation.

They used minimal force to quell the unruly mob.

However, Thursday will be remembered as the black day for news channels.

Some young and immature reporters caught up in the excitement of the situation delivered poor reports.

C.N. Kumar,

Bangalore

An embodiment of peace

Sir, — It was expected that total anarchy and vandalism would prevail on the day Rajkumar passed away. However, the State administration failed to manage the crowds. Dr. Rajkumar was an embodiment of grace, peace and humanity. Even the brigand Veerappan admired these qualities in him. I was once seated next to him on a flight to Mangalore. Parvathamma was seated a few rows behind us. Dr. Rajkumar could have asked me to exchange the seats, but he did not. When I told him that I would take her seat, he politely replied that we could stick to the allotted seats. I cannot forget this.

Mumtaz Ali Khan,

Bangalore

No excuse for violence

Sir, — I am a fan of Rajkumar since my childhood and have been affected by his death. However, that does that give me the licence to indulge in violence, looting and arson. The police should have rounded up the anti-social elements for resorting to violence on the day Dr. Rajkumar died. It is demoralising for law-abiding citizens to see policemen in uniform being beaten up by anti-social elements.

Syed Tanveeruddin,

Mysore

Power supply problem

Sir, — There is a chronic power supply problem at the Manasagangothri staff quarters. Whenever contacted, CHESCOM officials provided evasive replies. However, when I recently brought up the issue with the newly-appointed assistant executive engineer, he promptly responded to the problem.

M. Jameel Ahmed,

Mysore

Quotas are redundant

Sir, — Even as the IT sector in Karnataka is growing and generating employment for thousands of people, there is a demand (mostly from the political spectrum) for reservation of jobs for backward classes in the private sector. Reservation is a redundant concept today when excellence and quality is the buzzword.

Instead of demanding quota for backward classes, the Government should address the problems and challenges at the grassroots level by providing equal opportunity for pursuing quality education.

Even as employers in the private sector insist on knowing English, the Government is dithering over the popular demand to introduce English from first standard.

How can students from rural areas develop proper language skills unless they are exposed to English at an early stage?
