Advani to campaign in State on April 24

CHENNAI: Led by former Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani, Bharatiya Janata Party leaders will take part in election campaigns in the State on April 24. Mr. Advani will participate in electioneering at Hosur/Thalli; the party's strategist for the south M. Venkaiah Naidu in Madurai; national vice-president L. Ganesan and national secretary Bandaru Dattatreya in Chennai; former Union Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha in Coimbatore; party's election in-charge for Tamil Nadu Rajeev Pratap Rudy in Nagercoil and former Union Minister Shah Nawaz Hussain in Tiruchi.

"In the next phase, more leaders will visit the State around May 1," party general secretary G. Kumaravel told mediapersons on Sunday.

AIADMK cadres clash

TIRUPUR: In a clash between two groups of AIADMK cadres at a meeting at Koduvai, 20 km from here, on Sunday left six persons seriously injured.

The meeting was to introduce Animal Husbandry Minister and AIADMK candidate for the Pongalur Assembly seat P.V. Dhamodhiran. Charges and counter charges against the Minister over his attitude towards partymen prompted the clash. Supporters of Mr. Dhamodhiran and his rivals S.P. Loganathan and Shanmugam hurled chairs at each other. The Minister escaped unhurt as his followers took him away from the venue. A senior police officer said no case was registered as neither group lodged a complaint. — Staff Reporter

Government officials' appeal to EC

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Government Officials' Union has appealed to the Election Commission to permit the Government to issue orders for six of the announcements made by the Chief Minister at a conference of the union in February. They were: reduction of the eligibility period for time-scale pay for junior teachers from five to three years and regularisation of services of those who were employed during the employees' strike period on taking special examination of the Tamil Nadu Public Services Commission.

Resolutions to this effect were adopted at a meeting of the union. — Special Correspondent

Kisan sangam

writes to poll panel

CHENNAI: The Bharathiya Kisan Sangam has represented to the Chief Electoral Officer to direct Collectors to distribute flood relief assistance at the earliest. Though the Chief Election Commissioner B.B. Tandon, in late March, made it clear that the grant of relief on the existing scale to the beneficiaries who were identified prior to announcement of the elections could continue, necessary instructions had not reached the district administration and cooperative societies, the sangam general secretary P. Ayyakkannu said in his letter to the CEO. — Special Correspondent

Postgraduate teachers want vacancies filled

MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Post Graduate Teachers' Association has demanded that the new Government to be formed in the State should take steps to fill vacancies in Government and aided schools. It said the practice of appointing teachers on consolidated pay should be stopped. State president K. Rajendran, said there were thousands of teachers working on consolidated salary and they should be regularised. He said the pension benefits of Government teachers must be restored. State general secretary S. Chelladurai, said remuneration paid to teachers for Plus-Two paper valuation was very meagre and should be revised to Rs. 10.— Staff Reporter
