They take out demonstration, hold public meeting

WE DEMAND: Members of Karnataka State Government Daily Wage Employees Federation taking out a protest march in Hubli on Sunday.

HUBLI: Thousands of members of the Karnataka State Government Daily Wage Employees Federation took out a procession here on Sunday seeking regularisation of their services.

Federation president K.S. Sharma and vice-president Mohan Limbikai led the protest, which began from Gokul Road and culminated at the Hubli Tahsildar's office where a public meeting was held.

`Promulgate legislation'

Addressing protestors, Mr. Sharma urged the State Government to promulgate a legislation under Article 31(c) of the Constitution, to regularise daily wage employees who completed 10 years in service.

There are about 17,000 daily wage employees who had completed 10 years in service. A memorandum in this regard addressed to Chief Minister H.D. Kumarswamy was submitted to the Tahsildar by Mr. Sharma and Mr. Mohan Limbikai.

Earlier, at the general meeting of the federation held at the Vishvashrama Chetana Complex, K.S. Sharma dwelt at length on the judgment of the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court.

He welcomed that part of the judgment which directed Union and State Governments to regularise daily wage employees who were working in vacant sanctioned posts for 10 years and more. It appealed to the new coalition Government to regularise all daily wage employees in Karnataka as a one-time measure.

The general meeting unanimously resolved to observe May Day as "Demand Daily Wagers Regularisation Day" in Hubli to mount pressure on the State Government to regularise daily wage employees. A month-long "Contact People and People's Representatives Programme" was also chalked out. B.F. Vijapur, general secretary of Akhila Karnataka Primary Teachers Federation, also participated in the meeting.
