KOCHI: Thousands of Christians in the city participated in the Easter celebrations, which began with the traditional midnight mass on Saturday, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus.

In most churches, the ceremonies, interspersed with readings from the Bible and blessings of the fire and water, began at 10.30 p.m.

The Easter ceremonies were led by Daniel Acharuparampil, Archbishop of Varappuzha, at St. Francis Assisi Cathedral. Varkey Vithayathil, head of the Syro-Malabar Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly, led the celebrations at St. Mary's Basilica. John Tattumgal, Bishop of Cochin Diocese, led the Easter ceremonies at the Santa Cruz Basilica, Fort Kochi.

Solemn masses were celebrated at Catholic churches in the city on Sunday morning.

Easter Sunday is the culmination of weeklong remembrance of the Passion, crucifixion and death and resurrection of Jesus, which began with Palm Sunday and marks the end of Lent.
