THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Voter identity card is compulsory for voting in the coming Assembly elections, but the stipulation will be relaxed if the voter concerned had lost it or could not produce it at the polling station due to any unavoidable reason, the Chief Electoral Officer said here on Sunday. In a press release, the Chief Electoral Officer said that genuine voters who could not bring their identity cards to the polling stations would be allowed to cast their votes on the strength of other documents to establish identity.
Alternative documents
These include passport, driving licence, Income Tax pan card, photo-affixed bank/post office account card and photo-affixed identity card issued by Union/State Government or any public sector undertaking. In the case of bank/post office identity card, the account should have been opened on or before February 28, this year. The Chief Electoral Officer said that 99.21 per cent of all eligible voters had been included in the voters' list this time. However, there might be rare cases in which the photo of the voter was not included in the voters' list although all other particulars such as the name, address and identity card number were correctly recorded. There might also be rare cases in which the photo shown in the voters' list itself was that of a wrong person or the photo printed in the voters' list was poor in clarity. No voter would be disallowed permission to vote on account of such blemishes in the voters' list. In the event of such problems in the voters' list, the voter would be allowed to vote on the strength of the voter identity card or any of the documents mentioned above to establish the identity.
