Medical degree from China

R. Krishnamoorthy

Dalian Medical University, China, is in the fray to attract Indian students, promising medical education at a total cost of Rs. 8.76 lakhs, including food and living expenses.

Taking advantage of the high demand for medical seats and inadequate supply in India, the university has presented an opportunity for aspirants to do a ``world class MBBS'' degree in China, by presenting its credentials: a listing in the WHO Directory of Medical Schools, recognition by the Medical Council of China, and approval by the Ministry of Health, People's Republic of China.

The university considers its English medium of instruction and international curriculum (on a par with the Medical Council of India syllabus) as the significant factors that would make Indian students turn to China, according to S.L. Denis, chairman and managing director, Overseas Education Consultants, Tiruchi Franchisee of Pacific Consultancy Service.

From the perspective of the Indian students, the visiting faculty from India and the option provided for internship training in India are projected as advantages.

During the internship, the students could prepare for the MCI screening test to qualify themselves for practising in India. In effect, the students can complete MBBS in five years.

Aspirants for Dalian University are qualified to fill in the MCI eligibility form, and obtain educational bank loans in India.

According to Mr. Denis, Dalian Medical University, founded in 1947, is one of the top universities in China, with 15 colleges, five teaching departments, four affiliated hospitals (including three approved as `Triple A Level Hospitals') with over 5,000 patient beds.
