call on injured

BANGALORE: All the three sons of Kannada matinee idol Rajkumar on Sunday visited Victoria Hospital, Bowring Hospital and Mallige Nursing Home to call on those injured in the violence that followed Rajkumar's death on Wednesday.

Grants to gram panchayats

MYSORE: Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj C.M. Udasi on Sunday said that his department would place a proposal before the State Government to allocate grants to gram panchayats based on the performance and the strength of the respective gram panchayats.

Speaking to presspersons here, the Minister said that the decision to adopt this system was taken following complaints that the grants were not sufficient. — Staff Correspondent

Man dies in Belgaum violence

Belgaum: One person died and seven were injured when a group armed with swords and sickles attacked its political rivals while Dalits were celebrating the birthday of B.R. Ambedkar on the concluding day of Kamleshwar Jatra at Balekundri Khurd, about 15 kms from here on Saturday.

The man who died has been identified as Gabbar Adamsaab (32).

According to sources, the trouble started when the procession was passing through a lane where the house of the victim is located. A group, allegedly affiliated to MES, reportedly created nuisance in front of Adamsaab's house. Adamsaab made a telephone call to taluk panchayat member Mahadev Baganna Kedari. As Mr. Kedari was trying to convince the group, its members attacked Adamsaab and others. — Staff Correspondent

Elected

Bangalore: The names of the candidates for the Karnataka Ayurvedic and Unani Practitioners' Board has been announced. According to a release, five candidates have been elected for Ayurveda, two each for Integrated and Unani medicine. Those elected are Hiremath Sangayya Rachayya (Ayurveda), Wali Ashok Mallikarjun (Ayurveda), Hungund Basavaraj Bharamappa (Ayurveda), Basanagouda Sahebagouda Patil (Ayurveda), Ajit Kumar V. (Ayurveda), Mohammed Rafi H. Hakeem (Integrated), J. Aprameya Raman (Integrated), Khalid Jawad (Unani), and Shuhabuddin (Unani). — Staff Reporter
