Mysore: Amrita Bhoomi, an international centre for sustainable development, will be organising a seed carnival on the occasion of World Farmer Martyrs' Day on Monday in Chamarajanagar district. Speaking to presspersons here on Sunday, executive trustee of Amrita Bhoomi, Chukki Nanjundaswamy, said the carnival was being organised on Martyr's Day at Jyothigowdanapura in Chamarajanagar district. Farmers' leaders from India and abroad, including Daniel Camenduli of Italy, would participate in the carnival, she said. World Farmer Martyrs' Day is observed on April 17 as a mark of respect to the farmers of Brazil who were massacred during a struggle for their livelihood. Ms. Nanjundaswamy said the carnival was being organised to declare a war against genetic engineering and genetically modified food.
`Not a perfect science'
Genetic engineering, she said, was not a perfect science, but only an excuse to have a hold over the seeds and eventually over the civilisation. A two-day international symposium on seed was being organised in Mysore from Tuesday where eminent speakers would deliver lectures on genetically modified food and seed sovereignty. Chamarajanagar correspondent writes: The establishment of a seed bank and inauguration of an international seed carnival at Amrutha Bhoomi will be a tribute to former Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha president M.D. Nanjundaswamy. He had envisaged setting up of an international centre for sustainable development of rare and endangered plant species. Nanjundaswamy was instrumental in setting up Amrutha Bhoomi in 180 acres of land in the foothills of the Biligiri Ranga forest range.
