Four girls drowned

KURNOOL: Four girls drowned at Yerukala Cheruvu in Krishnagiri mandal of Kurnool district on Sunday. According to reports, the girls got into a well in a field on the outskirts of the village for water and drowned. The deceased were identified as Kamala (12), Lakshmi (12), Leelavathi (10) and Lakshmamma (11).

Kodela's son

dies in accident

HYDERABAD: Dr. K. Satyanarayana (27), son of former Health Minister and senior TDP leader Kodela Sivaprasada Rao died in a road accident on Sunday evening near Siddipet in Medak district. He was a Medical Officer in Singareni Collieries Company Limited at Godavarikhani. He was proceeding in his car to Godavarikhani when he lost control and hit a tree. Staff Reporter

Held for killing sambar

VIZIANAGARAM: Twenty tribals were arrested and cases were registered under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 against them for killing a seven-year-old sambar in the forest near Salur on Saturday. Forest Range Officer, G. Laxman said the tribals hunted the animal as part of celebrating their annual "itikala panduga" and were found carrying the carcass. — Correspondent

Posthumous honour

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Indian Railways' National Award for Outstanding Service was given posthumously to a RPF Head Constable Jogi Raja Rao who was killed by the naxalites at Kooneru Railway Station on December 25, 2005. Raja Rao's widow, Lakshmi, received the award which included a certificate and a silver medal, from the Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav at Vignan Bhavan, New Delhi, recently.

ADILABAD: Bhoolakshmi, wife of Adilabad MP T. Madhusudan Reddy died at Apollo Hospitals Hyderabad. She was in a coma since March 2004 when she suffered a head injury in car accident. She was cremated at Adilabad. — Staff Reporter

Seven injured in clash

ADILABAD: Seven persons were injured when members of two communities clashed on Sunday over a love affair. According to Utnoor DSP A. Shesha Rao, the boy and girl eloped on April 13, apparently to get married, as their parents opposed the marriage. On Sunday, the girl's community members came out on the streets of Jainoor village and tried to enforce a bandh. Members of the other community opposed this move and a clash resulted. A meeting of the peace committee was being held. — Staff Reporter

exchange fire

Mahabubnagar: There was an exchange of fire between police and members of CPI (Maoist) at Udimilla village in Nallamalla forest of Amrabad mandal on Saturday night. No casualties were reported. Police recovered some kit bags from the spot. According to reports, a group of 40 to 50 armed Maoists were holding grama sabha in the village. Some Maoists stood guard on the road diverting vehicles. They stopped an RTC bus in which Amrabad CI Goverdhan Giri was going to Maddimadugu village. Noticing the police the Maoists opened fire and police also retaliated. The exchange lasted for about 15 minutes, leaving the bus damaged. Correspondent
