CHANDIGARH: The School of Public Health at the PGI here is organising a six-day training programme from April 17 for the district and State Surveillance Teams as part of Integrated Disease Surveillance Projects. According to an official spokesman, the School of Public Health, coming under the Department of Community Medicine, has been designated as a sub-nodal centre for surveillance in PGIMER under the National Surveillance Programme for Communicable Disease (NSPCD). The Department brings out Public Health Surveillance Bulletin annually. The spokesman further said that most of the existing disease control programmes have surveillance components that exist independently but many do not function in a coordinated manner. For the surveillance system to be efficient and cost effective all such activities need to be coordinated and information and resources shared. The IDSP, launched in 2004, is an action- oriented decentralized project covering both communicable and non-communicable diseases and integrating both public and private sector. The project would cover the entire country in three phases. Chandigarh and Haryana would be covered in phase II and Punjab in phase III. Delegates from Rajasthan, Haryana and Chandigarh would be attending the programme. Prof. Rajesh Kumar, Head of Community Medicine will be the nodal officer while Dr. J.S. Thakur will be the course coordinator.
