Kasaragod: Jagadguru Sankaracharya Bharathi Thirta Mahaswamigal has exhorted the citizens of the country to preserve the universal values and traditions of India. He was delivering the benedictory address at the inauguration of the Viswa Karada Sammelena Mantapa of Karada Sammelana (All World Karada Conference) at Agalpady Devi Temple in Kasaragod district on Sunday. The Sankaracharya of Sringeri Saradapeeetham, who is on a four-day official visit to the State from Saturday, lauded the Karada Brahmin community for maintaining their customs and traditions in the modern age. He said he was pleased to be present on the auspicious occasion, as the Karada Brahmins accepted him as their spiritual guru. The Jagadguru said the arguments and criticism that age-old traditions were fallacious were untrue. "The rishis of the ancient India were more intelligent. Western scientists are now saying that what was mentioned in the holy texts is correct, the Sankaracharya said. Balakrishna Bhatt, Karnataka Member of the Legislative Council, presided over the programme. Karnataka Minister for Medical Education V.S. Acharya and Minister for Fisheries, Ports and Endowments, B. Nagraj Shetty were also present. As many as 30 persons who have achieved eminence in various fields of activity were honoured at the event. Earlier in the day, the Sankaracharya who reached Agalpady from Malla was given the ceremonial " poornakumbha" reception at Agalpady Devi Temple. He also dedicated the west gopuram of the temple. Sri Sarada Sankara Seva Samithi general secretary Kannur P.N. Gopalakrishnan was also present on the occasion. He also inaugurated the Golden Jubilee fete of the Agalpady High School and its new building. In the afternoon, the Sankaracharya visited the Mulleria Vidyasree Bharati School. He visited Thaire Mutt at Chattanchal in the evening. Later, the Sankaracharya left for Malla Durga Parameswari Temple to perform the Chandramouleeswara puja.
