NEW DELHI: From producing food items to providing software solutions, a host of job-oriented vocational courses are being introduced in Asia's biggest jail - Tihar - to help inmates improve their skills in new age professions. ``In a bid to help the prisoners improve their skills in different new age professions, the jail authorities are giving training in those fields in collaboration with about eight NGOs having expertise,'' Sunil Kumar, Law officer in Tihar, said here. ``The drive has been taken up since last one month as part of the jail reform process. It aims at making the inmates self-sufficient even after completing their terms in the prison,'' he said. NGOs like Sterelite Foundation and Jyoti Jagruti Santhan have started imparting training in computer, tailoring, embroidery making, bakery item preparation among other courses, he said. Earlier the prisoners were allowed to work in the kitchen, factory and gardens of the jail, he said adding, however, these kinds of work did not help them much in terms of experience or skill development to earn their livelihood after their release.- PTI
