Pressure on U.P. Government to release water

  • Inauguration of development works worth Rs.55 lakhs at Sangam Vihar
  • Plan to strengthen and widen the Mehrauli-Badarpur Road

NEW DELHI: Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Sunday expressed the hope that sustained pressure from the Centre would result in the Uttar Pradesh Government releasing water for the Sonia Vihar treatment plant soon. The matter has also been taken up with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Water Resources Minister Saifuddin Soz was also pursuing it with the Uttar Pradesh Government, she said.

Speaking at a public meeting after inaugurating development works worth Rs.55 lakhs at Sangam Vihar in South Delhi, Ms. Dikshit said the ambitious Sonia Vihar water treatment plant would help in meeting the water requirements of the entire Capital by helping the Delhi Jal Board streamline the supply across the city. She hoped that from this summer onwards some kind of arrangement would be reached paving the way for the supply of Ganga water from Muradnagar in Uttar Pradesh.

The Delhi Chief Minister also disclosed that her Government has chalked out a comprehensive plan to strengthen and widen the Mehrauli-Badarpur Road that would have foot over-bridges with escalators for the convenience of pedestrians apart from cycle tracks. Stating that her Government was committed to provide better civic amenities to residents, she said she has also enhanced the annual development fund for unauthorised colonies on private land from Rs.20 lakhs to Rs.25 lakhs.

Giving details about various development projects being undertaken in the area, Ms. Dikshit said the construction of main Ratia Marg and covered drains in Sangam Vihar would be completed well before the onset of monsoon.

To tackle the drinking water problem in the area, 16 tubewells, apart from three at Jamia Hamdard University, would also be commission soon, she said, assuring residents that a hospital would also be opened in the area to meet their medical requirements.
