Excel in all spheres, students told

SSN Group of Institutions celebrated its tenth college day

CHENNAI: The SSN Group of Institutions celebrated its tenth college day on its Kalavakkam campus recently.

P. Radhakrishnan, Vice-Chancellor, Vellore Institute of Technology, who was the chief guest and who distributed prizes to students who excelled in academics and cultural and sports events, said: "Indians have been recognised as first class citizens by the efforts of entrepreneurs such as Shiv Nadar, N.R. Narayanamurthy and Azim Premji. Students should thus excel not only in academics but also in all spheres to become entrepreneurs."

Aparna Krishna, of the Electronics and Communication Engineering Department, was adjudged the best outgoing student of the college, while Ramasubramanian R, Venkatesh B and Uma Parvathy K were honoured for being the best outgoing students of the Computer Science Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Information Technology Departments respectively.

Medals awarded

In academics, 33 students were awarded the gold medals and 31 silver medals in the undergraduate programs for 2004 - 05. In the postgraduate programs, 21 students received gold medals and 20 silver medals.

S. Salivahanan, Principal, said the institution, founded by Shiv Nadar of HCL Technologies, was a prime education centre where merit was the only criterion. "... we have a thriving tradition of awarding 240 scholarships every year for meritorious and deserving students. This year, we have disbursed scholarships worth Rs.2.52 crores."

Sairam Sundaresan, first year student of the ECE Department, was awarded Rs.2.78 lakh in scholarship as he secured top scores in the CBSE examination.

The `Walk-In-Walk Out' scholarship is awarded to any BE/B. Tech student who has come within top 10 ranks in Standard XII of any Board, or the top ten ranks in the Tamil Nadu Professional Courses Entrance Examination.

The SSN Institutions has created a Research Advisory Council, headed by its chairman Shiv Nadar, with the aim of producing Nobel Laureates.

Pact with Taiwan varsity

It has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science faculty of the National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), Taiwan — credited with three Nobel Laureates — for collaborative research and faculty and student exchange.

Present on the occasion were management committee members Kala Vijayakumar, N. Ranjit and P. Sivaprasad.
