COVA to the rescue of quake-hit in Uri, Karnah

Civil engineers to help rebuild houses

HYDERABAD: Confederation of Voluntary Associations (COVA) and VAN Kashimir in collaboration with Central Rehabilitation Coordination Committees (CRCCs) of Karnah and Uri tahsils launched `Operation Salvage' aimed at providing expert engineering assistance to the families whose houses were damaged in the October 8, 2005 earthquake.

In a press release, Director, Hyderabad chapter of COVA, Mazher Hussain said Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir, Basharat Ahmad flagged off the first batch of 52 trained civil engineers on Sunday, who would be spending 10 days each in the villages and advice whether retrofitting and repair work can be taken up on the damaged houses.

In all, 300 engineers are expected to participate in the month-long operation and it is estimated that each engineer will help in salvaging property worth Rs 8 lakhs everyday in the affected areasand about 3 billion rupees is expected to be saved on the whole.
