Coimbatore
M. Soundariya Preetha
COIMBATORE: The city has grown leaps and bounds and has seen many changes, especially during the last 10 years. And, the Local Planning Authority (LPA) is in the process of finalising the revised master plan for the city (the current one was approved in 1994). "The review and survey are over for the revised plan," says S.A. Balasubramanium, Joint Director of the LPA.
Land use
Apart from revising the current plan, the LPA has also drafted a projection of land use for another five years, including for industrial and residential purposes. He explains that based on use, land can be classified as: residential, commercial, industrial, educational, public and semi-public or agricultural. The master plan includes Coimbatore city and 99 villages in the surrounding places, including special panchayats. The residential land is sub-classified as primary and mixed and industrial as controlled, general and special or hazardous. According to the current plan, the city area is 10,553.43 hectares. Of this, 61.85 per cent is residential, 2.24 per cent - commercial, 4.17 per cent - industrial, 6.26 per cent - educational, 2.25 per cent - public and semi-public and 23.23 per cent - agricultural land. Area under most of the classifications has gone up now and many of the industries have moved out to the outskirts.
