Thiruvananthapuram: The Haemophilia Society of Kerala will observe the World Haemophilia Day on Monday. The theme this year is `Treatment for all.' Haemophilia is a genetic bleeding disorder in which an essential clotting factor in the blood, Factor 8 or Factor 9, is either partly or fully missing. This means that even the most minor trauma or injury can result in serious internal bleeding, especially in the joints, muscles and soft tissues. In the event of bleeding, the patient has to be treated by giving regular injections of the clotting factor or else s/he could die of uncontrolled bleeding. Improper diagnosis and the high cost of factor concentrates required for treating haemophilia patients has made prompt treatment impossible for a large number of patients. The World Haemophilia Day this year focusses on the global efforts to convince health authorities of the need to improve diagnosis and treatment for people with haemophilic and other related bleeding disorders. Most haemophilia patients die young because treatment is inaccessible or unaffordable, says G.M. Ashok Kumar, president of the Haemophilia Society of Kerala.
