HYDERABAD: A sudden downpour in the city and on the outskirts caused a drop in mercury on Sunday. The clouds that kept gathering since morning opened up later in the day forcing denizens to abandon their holiday outings and scurry back home. Till 11.30 p.m., 27 mm of rainfall was recorded. Coming in spells, the rain turned severe around 9 p.m. and malls, eateries and recreation spots that usually bustle with Sunday crowds suddenly turned deserted.

Power supply hit

Many were drenched as the downpour turned heavy, accompanied with strong winds.

Some of the roads got waterlogged and those who tried to drive along in the downpour were seen wading through while the traffic had to move slowly at several points. Parts of the city were plunged into darkness as power supply was disrupted at Mehdipatnam, Chaderghat, Chikkadpally, Padmaraonagar, Nallakunta and Kukatpally. The maximum temperature recorded was 33.9 degree Celsius, which happened to be around 5 degrees to 6 degrees less than normal for this season. The minimum recorded was 25 degree Celsius.

Thunder showers likely

The Met Department forecast a few spells of rain or thundershowers on Monday. The rain in the city and across Telangana and Rayalaseema has been attributed to an upper air trough from Marathwada to South Peninsula.

This happened to be the second spell of rain in a week. On Wednesday last, winds and rain left trees uprooted and normal life was disrupted.
