dated April 18, 1956: Sethusamudram Project

The Deputy Minister for Transport, Mr. O.V. Alagesan, said in the Lok Sabha on April 16 that the expert committee to explore the possibility of Sethusamudram Project for connecting the Gulf of Munnar with the Palk Strait had submitted its report. It had reported that the establishment of a new navigation route by cutting a ship canal across the mainland a few miles to the west of Pamban bridge as an alternative to the existing longer route and the simultaneous development of Tuticorin into a 26 feet deep harbour were feasible.
