Doctors begin stir in Hospet

It is in protest against the assault on two doctors

BELLARY: Doctors of nursing homes and clinics in Hospet began their week-long strike on Monday to register their protest against the attack on two doctors following the death of a patient recently.

The doctors, under the banner of Hospet unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), submitted a memorandum to the Assistant Commissioner and the Deputy Superintendent of Police explaining their plight in the wake of the growing tendency among angry relatives of patients to assault doctors.

Background

A woman, who suffered a fracture in an accident, was operated upon by an orthopaedic surgeon. After the surgery, the patient died owing to cardiac arrest. Enraged on hearing the news about her death, the relatives of the deceased reportedly attacked doctors and the staff of the hospital. Yuvaraj, secretary, IMA Hospet unit, told The Hindu that the strike was not against anybody but to oppose the assault on doctors, who did their best to treat patients. The doctors appealed to the authorities concerned to take steps to prevent such incidents.
