Move aimed at saving time, says Corporation Commissioner

  • One of the four contractors has withdraw from road improvement project
  • About 40 per cent of the work has been completed
  • Corporation wants to entrust the work to one of the other three contractors

HUBLI: Following the termination of the one of the four contracts under the Rs. 30-crore Road Improvement Project of the twin cities, Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation has approached the State Government to get sanction for getting the work done by the remaining three contractors.

Corporation Commissioner P. Manivannan told The Hindu that since calling for fresh tenders again would delay the project, the corporation had requested the State Government to permit entrusting of the work to contractors, who were executing work under the other three packages of the project.

Since these contractors could be asked to execute the work as additional work as per the tender conditions, it would save time involved in calling for fresh tenders.

Corporation superintending engineer S.L. Koshti, who is in-charge of the Rs. 30-crore Road Improvement Project, said that 40 per cent of the roadworks under the project had been completed till March 31.

Chandragiri Construction Company, which had bid for the Hubli North package, had withdrawn from the contract with amicable settlement as the company expressed its inability to carry out the work under the present conditions, he said.

    Schemes dropped

Following the beginning of the work related to the drinking water project, seven out of the 14 roads identified to be improved under the Hubli North package, had been deleted and seven alternative roads had been included.

While 30 per cent of the roadworks had been completed under the Dharwad (South) package, the percentage of work completed under Dharwad (North) package was only 25 per cent, he said.

    Fined

The corporation levied a fine on two contractors for failing to complete the roadworks according to schedule. Consequently, there had been improvement in the pace of roadworks under these two packages.
