Pondicherry
Special Correspondent
Pondicherry: The ruling Congress in Pondicherry, in addition to facing the Opposition, has also to surmount the problem of its own party candidates becoming rebels. Despite Pradesh Congress Committee president P. Shanmugham and AICC secretary P. Sudhakar Reddy's warning to those turning dissidents and filing nominations as rebels challenging the official nominees many rebels are joining the fray as Independents. The most embarrassing development for the Congress is the filing of nomination by PCC vice-president V. Sabapathy alias Kothandaraman in Mudaliarpet as an Independent on Monday. Already the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) of the Democratic Progressive Alliance, which includes the Congress, has already fielded its candidate M.A.S. Subramanian. The followers of Mr. Sabapathy thought that the constituency would be allotted to the Congress. But it was allotted to the DMK. A. Elumalai, Local Administration Minister in the Rangasamy Cabinet, has decided to contest in Oussudu (reserved) as a rebel candidate. Already, Raksha Harikrishna, a Congress functionary, has jumped into the battle as an Independent in Yanam. He has since been sacked from the party.
