Rebel Congress candidate sacked

Special Correspondent

For not withdrawing nominations as Independent

  • Raksha Harikrishna already warned to refrain from challenging official candidate
  • Shanmugham warns dissidents of stern disciplinary action
  • Same action will be taken against A. Elumalai if he turns rebel, says PCC president

Pondicherry: The president of Pondicherry Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) P Shanmugham announced at a press conference here on Monday that Raksha Harikrishna a functionary of the Yanam region unit of the ruling Congress was expelled from the party with immediate effect, as he had not withdrawn his nomination filed as an Independent challenging the official nominee of the party (Malladi Krishna Rao) in the coming Assembly poll in Yanam.

(Yanam an enclave of Pondicherry has a lone segment and will go to polls in the first phase on May 3. Eleven candidates (four party sponsored and seven Independents) are left in the fray in the constituency).

Mr. Shanmugham said already the party had warned Raksha Harikrishna to refrain from challenging the official candidate.

As the last date to withdraw nominations had already come to an end on Saturday, the party decided to sack him from the party. Mr. Shanmugham said that disciplinary action would be taken against all those who had planned to become dissidents and file nominations as Independents to challenge the official candidates.

He said that the Local Administration Minister A Elumalai had also gone on record stating that he would contest from Oussudu reserved constituency as an Independent in a bid to retain it, as a mark of protest against the Congress allotting the constituency to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

    DMK nominee announced

The DMK had since announced its nominee for the constituency depriving Elumalai of the opportunity.

Mr. Shanmugham said that it was indeed a pity that those party leaders who were becoming dissidents were doing so after enjoying the benefits of offices and other facilities in the Government.

He said if there was no reconsideration of his stand to become an Independent in the polls in Oussudu the party would not hesitate to inflict disciplinary action on Elumalai.

Mr. Shanmugham also said that it was the duty of every worker to ensure massive win of the Democratic Progressive Alliance as a whole.
