KAKINADA: S.S. Krishnaji, senior journalist and president, Andhra Pradesh Passengers' Association, has sent a telegram to President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad and Railway Board Chairman expressing shock at the way the Railway Minister has introduced the new system of calculating passenger fares dispensing with practice of telescopic method of calculation for long distance passengers who are required to change trains at railway junctions - to make more money. To cite a case, a passenger travelling from Kakinada to Mangalore has to purchase two tickets here -- one from Kakinada to Chennai and another from Chennai to Mangalore as the passenger has to board West Coast Express at Madras Central. Consequently, fare has increased to Rs. 150 for sleeper class and nearly Rs. 400 for a/c sleeper. It is tantamount to cheating to collect extra fares without including it in the railway budget or notifying it in the media. Mr. Krishnaji has appealed to the authorities concerned to drop it in the interest of good governance.
