`LDF-BJP understanding in four districts'

Staff Reporter

`Deve Gowda seems to have played a crucial role'

ALAPPUZHA: "There are indications that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) has reached an electoral understanding with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in four districts in the State," Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi has said.

At a press conference here on Monday, Mr. Ravi said "the former Prime Minister and

Janata Dal(S) leader Deve Gowda seemed to have played a crucial role in helping the LDF and the BJP reach an understanding."

The JD(S) wanted to ensure the victory of its candidate M.V. Sreyamskumar who is

contesting as an LDF candidate in Wayanad district. The BJP-LDF understanding would be in the districts of Malappuram, Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram, besides Wayanad, he said.

Mr. Gowda as the JD(S) chief had approved the action of his son, Kumara Swami, who aligned with the BJP and formed a new Government in Karnataka. The LDF should oust the JD(S) from the front if it wanted to prove that it did not want to have any truck with the BJP, Mr. Ravi said.

Karat's statement

CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat's recent statements on the emerging situations after the Assembly polls had the tone of a threat to the UPA Government at the Centre and the people of the State should take it seriously.

Any bid to weaken the UPA Government would result in the return of the BJP to power, which would harm the minorities, he said.

Mr. Ravi said the CPI(M) Polit Bureau had revealed its weakness by initially deciding not to field Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan as a candidate and later reversing the decision. The national leadership of a party should not have acted like that, he felt.
