TIRUPATI: The Tirupati telecom district of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has posted an impressive performance for the financial year 2005-06 by earning revenue on various fronts. At a time when growth of the cellular segment is perceived to be at the cost of landline phones, the Nigam has reversed the trend and seen a rise in demand for the same. As many as 18,855 B-fone (landline) connections had been given during the year, taking the number close to 1.42 lakh in the district, while the revenue from this sector jumped from Rs.96 crore to Rs.101 crore. At a media conference here on Tuesday, General Manager of BSNL-Tirupati, R.Mani said that a whopping 30 cell sites had been commissioned during this year alone, taking their total number in the district to 67. Work was in progress at sixteen more places like B.Kothakota, Bhakarapet, GD Nellore, Nagalapuram, Pathikonda, Kuppam (PES medical college), Piler, Thamballapalle, Byreddipalle, Tirumala (Dharmagiri road), Chittoor (Kongareddypalle), Nerabailu, Peddapanjani and Tirupati (KK Layout, Tiruchanur). DataOne net service Mr.Mani said "DataOne", the company's Broadband service was the most preferred high-speed internet service, which was being used by 1,037 customers in less than a year after it was launched in Tirupati. The corporation had also started eyeing major institutions like TTD, Southern Discom and APSRTC for big business. BSNL had installed Wide Area Network (WAN) in TTD and Southern Discom, while Centrex (centralised telephone exchange) had been set up in TTD and APSRTC. The "Fibre- in-Loop Overlay Project" to provide OFC media to banks, industrial establishments, high rise apartments, educational institutions etc. is in progress.
